About Athens

Welcome to Athens – or Athina (/a' θ ina /) – as Greeks or Hellenes (/' ε lin ε s /) call it.
With thousands of years of history and a tradition steeped in mythology, the city – named after Athena , the goddess of wisdom – is the capital of Greece or Hellas (/e'las/), with a population of roughly 3,500,000 citizens.

Throughout, there are ancient remains, the most prominent of which is the Acropolis, a reminder of the glory of the 5 th century B.C. Athenian Democracy (/ð imokra'tia/), the first ever democracy in the world. You can also see many Byzantine churches and monasteries and admire the well-preserved neo-classical buildings to be found in the center and in older neighborhoods such as Plaka.

Of course, Athens is a modern city as well. The host of the 2004 Olympic Games (the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896), it boasts an expanding new subway system and new metro and tram systems.

It is a hospitable city, with many outdoor cafes, pedestrian streets, parks, and gardens, and nightlife for all budgets and tastes.

Also, the center of Athens is only 35' away by subway to the port of Piraeus (/pir ε ' as/). From there, you can take boats to all the nearby islands of the Saronic Gulf (Hydra, Poros, Aegina, Spetses), the Cycladic islands, the islands of the Dodecanese, Crete , and many others.
If you wish to enjoy the beach, the nearest ones can easily be accessed by tram.

Enjoy your stay!
